    Does channel 2 go through v1 as well?

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67 4 месяца назад

      By channel 2 do you mean 1B? Take a look at my video description. V1 is going to be your input stage for channels 1 through 4. So using a high quality tube here is important. The tube layout of this amp is a bit funky and almost unconventional.

    • @dangood2287
      @dangood2287 4 месяца назад

      @@mmagoon67 no I mean channel 2. Watch your video, at channel two at first you say v4 is like a v1 and doesn’t influence the earlier tubes, but when describing v5, you say it goes from v1 to v4 to v5. It’s a little confusing because then you say changing v5 won’t influence other parts of the amp, like changing v4 would and your hand motions towards v1-v3 but I think you’re saying v4 -v8 are completely separate from v1-v3?

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67 4 месяца назад

      @dangood2287 OK, so I'm referring to "amp" 2, which has "channels" 2A and 2B. Yes, "amp" 2 will utilize v1. "Amp" 3, which has channels 3A and 3B will not begin with v1 it will begin at v4. The Triamp has 3 "amps" with 2 channels each. Amps 1 & 2 (channels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B) will use v1 as its first tube. Amp 3 will begin at v4. It can be confusing, but make sure to distinguish between "amps" and "channels" and it might clear it up.

    Great comparison! To my ears, the JJ ECC83s sounded the darkest and the Tung-Sol sounded the brightest, while the Mullard CV4004 was right in between them. The JJ E83CC sounded like a beefed-up (more low-mids) CV4004. Comparing the JJ ECC803s to the ECC803s Gold Pin version, the Gold Pin version seems to add back the low end that the long plates attenuate compared to the ECC83s. The ECC803s Gold Pin seemed to have the fullest range and was the loudest of all the tubes. I believe there are some structural differences between the standard JJ ECC803s and the Gold Pin version as well making them quieter and more durable.

    Another Triamp owner with a question! Thank you for the great videos. I just picked one up and I’ve got a 60 cycle hum on channels A2 and C2. The guy I bought the amp from told me it might have a bad filter cap but the hum isn’t present on every amp just those two, so I figure the issue’s more a tube one. Am I mostly correct in my assumption? I’m gonna have a tech look at it anyways but i figured if I could save some money by swapping out some tubes I’d like to do that first

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67 7 месяцев назад

      I don't know about the deeper internal electronics of the amp, but yes, the simplest thing this issue could be is a tube(s). What you could do is figure out which tubes run on the channels with the noise and swap the tubes around and see if the hum moves to a different channel. Although I will say this: I've never had a tube create a 60 cycle hum on me before so the issue could be something else.

      @mmagoon67 9 месяцев назад

      These tubes are balanced. Preamp tubes have two sides and the phase inverter position will run both sides. I believe one side has the phase reversed so that it can go to the power tubes. If both sides of the tube do not match you will hear a slight "out of phase" sound which can very in severity depending on how unbalanced the tube is.

    looks like youve researched online and not in real life. talking about 7025/12ax7a or cv4004 in modern tubes is plain stupid, it means nothing just like the sprayed gold pins ,pure bullshit. don't mix vintage and modern, you compare tubes with different gain ratings so the results are random. get a tube tester if you want to isolate the tone. get some vintage tubes if you are after the best tone. do you want to compare 13 chinese pickups? for real info i suggest reaching an expert ,otherwise you have no idea and you can fuck around forever with tube rolling instead of solving the problem.

    John Suhr and Dave Friedman both say JJ tubes are crap. I assume they mean ''as of late.'' These guys are a a couple of the best amp builders around. They claim Electro Harmonix matched tubes are the way to go. I do have a set of JJ matched EL 34 power tubes that are from about 10 years ago that I'll be trying in my Suhr SL 68 this week. BTW, I'm using my wife's account to post here.

    • @mmagoon67

      I don't put a lot of stock in what the "professionals" say in this case. JJ tubes are perfectly fine tubes and I've had zero issues with them for over 10 years. They have always been bigger, richer, meaner sounding than other tube brands. I don't dislike tubes often, but to say something like that with the influence you have as a professional...you really might be steering people who would prefer the JJ sounds away from what would actually please them. I just sold 2 of my JJ 6CA7s to a friend to put into his Blackstar HT Club 40 combo because after trying a bunch of different kinds he liked the JJs. If I had told him JJs were crap I would have robbed him of a preferable tone.

I've had original Svetlana EL34's in it for 20 years, believe it or not. The reliability and tone have been superior. I want to try something different now since original Svetlana's are no longer available. My amp tech is suggesting the JJ EL34's, but as has been stated, some professionals have voiced their concerns about the JJ EL34's in general and I'm leery. I am also considering Mullard and EH. Reliability is important to me as well as a full and aggressive tone. What are your thoughts?

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67 6 месяцев назад

      @markn4526 I like the JJ E34Ls a lot. They are slightly more relaxed in the high end and have a tighter more aggressive low end. If you're wanting aggressive then they are worth getting. Please also note these tubes will not help clarity in your clean channels. I also like the Telefunken Black Diamond EL34s. As far as reliability, as I have said previously, I find JJ tubes reliable. I have yet to replace any JJ due to failure. However, with buying any tubes, you want to buy them from a reputable place. I prefer Eurotubes. Any tube can fail and be unreliable if it's not a well made tube. That's why reputable places put their tubes through rigorous testing to ensure the highest probability of longevity and quality. They also tend to be more expensive because they are higher quality though other places might sell them cheaper.

More research led me to these being China made 80s 90s tubes made in the Beijing plant before closing in 1996. 2 idetifiers are the square foil getter supported by 2 leads also the middle spacer is round. I have been finding these marked as Mesa 12ax7a, fender, GT, National, ARS, Peavey Super 7. I have been shocked by the way my Mesa gear has responded. I have several China 12AX7B and C with Octagon shaped middle mica spacer and halo getter and they sound nothing like the early square getter version. I can see why in the 80s and 90s these came equipped in the famous amps from Mesa, 5150, Soldano etc. Even installed some in a Carvin 120 and Peavey Ultra Plus. Great hidden gem. I was running Genelax Gold Lion CV4004s for quite a while now they are in my stash of tubes. Running a red dot 6N4J in V1, ARS 12ax7a in V2. An International Service Master 7025/12ax7a in V3, Mesa Acid marked 12ax7 in V4 another Mesa Acid Marked in V5 and a balanced Philips Miniwatt in V6. Unreal. Ive collected about 30 extras and test each one and listen to them in V1 of an 84 Mark IIC+ then grade them.

    Just an FYI....the bridge is not a Floyd Rose, it is a non-locking proprietary design exclusive to EBMM. That color is absolutely gorgeous!

    Ah yes… poking at a bias supply with a knife that clearly has metal on the handle. Get yourself a proper screwdriver that has an acrylic or wooden handle. You don’t wanna catch 450V, I’d imagine.

    Hi...just seen this video and you sound like the guy who could help with my amp. I've only just got my Triamp MK3, I play Gibson's, mostly with Seymour Duncan JB bridge pickups, and I'm also using a Fryette Power Station 100, all into a Boggie oversize 4x12. On top of that I'm running an Axe FX3 in 4CM. Basically my amp sounds crap! Ch1 has to be run so quiet that I'm using one of the PS channels to boost its volume otherwise it clips like mad...really badly on the low E but only when I fret the string and pick with gusto. Ch2 is just a bunch of wooly mush that stays awful no matter the tube combination or how I change the EQ. 2A-3B have no real gain/saturation...I thought this would be a high gain amp, and it just isn't. I bought the amp new, but I know it was sitting in the store for a long time. Do you think I should be replacing all tubes? If so what would you recommend? I love a good clean channel, but after that it's Marshall 800 to ENGL Special Edition-type gain/saturation that I'm used to and trying to get close to. Also how do you get that back panel off? I cannot see any screws anywhere✌ Thanks...long message, I know, but you sound like the sort of guy that could make sense of this.

      No problem with the long message. A couple of things to rule out first. This problem occurs with every guitar correct? It sounds like you have a lot going on. Which is fine. But, do you have this problem if you run just the amp alone with a guitar and absolutely nothing else running though it? Try and narrow down the issue. This amp should run incredibly smooth with high gain saturation for days and should have a completely clean 1A channel. The issue could very well be the tubes if you're running the amp alone, but it's best to be sure before making that expensive fix. Also, it may be worth looking into some other videos on what tube failure sounds like and the characteristics of it and see if this is exactly your experience. The reason I ask about the guitars is because I have a battery powered unit in my guitar that mixes my Piezo and my pickups together and when the battery is low I have the same experience. The clean channels crackle and the gain saturation goes away. Basically, there isn't enough signal going to the amp and the amp is starving for signal strength. The back panel is held in by 4 screws on the sides of the amp. 2 on the left and 2 on the right. If you're looking at the amp from the back they'll be on the sides.

      @@mmagoon67 Thanks for the reply. I think I might be on the verge of cracking it. I spent hours with it again today, and staring at level meters on my Axe FX3. I tried just the amp on its own, and a number of different guitars. I think I've narrowed it down to a couple of things. First the input and output volumes on the Axe FX3. I've spent a while bringing the FX loop level on the amp and the FX3 to the same volume. Before when the FX loop was engaged the volume dropped. Secondly after having spoken to a tech at Fryette there is an issue with a chip in the Power Station, which I think might be causing some volume issues too. By the time I finished with it this afternoon was getting close to having something that sounded good.

    Did you do anything before hooking up your tube probe or do you just take a reading and turn the pot TR2?

    I have a Dsl20hr that I was about to give up on. Only had JJ ecc83s and stock tubes. Bought a used single rectifier head recently and the dude threw in extra tubes. One was a Mesa Boogie 12ax7 Russian 2. The other is made by Hammond in the USA. Has 12ax7 in red but Is mostly worn off. Can't find anything out about it. Anyway I put the mesa in v1, a JJ ecc83s in v2, and the Hammond 12ax7 in v3( phase inverter) it's like a whole new amp. At first I tried the Mesa in v3 and the Hammond in v1 but didn't sound too good. Preamp tube selection is crucial in my limited experience.

    They all sound too similar with distortion. A clean comparison would have been helpful

    Great demo. Not a big difference between them except maybe level. I definitely lean towards the warmer 6V6 as you get more head room before distorting I believe. You can always increase distortion but it's hard to do the reverse if it's already there on lower levels.

    a V30 is definitely gonna go in my 100w Katana MkII amp, sounds a heap better, esp mic'd. Just have to be careful with the V30 being a 60w speaker
